A You Tube video clip and smartphones were used for the lesson. The subjects in the pilot lesson were freshmen in a non-language-related faculty in a university in Japan. The main aim of the pilot study was to serve as a pre-test and to observe whether the use of smartphones and the You Tube video clip was appropriate for the lesson in terms of drawing low-achieving and/or reluctant students’ attention towards the lesson, and checking the level of English of the video.
